Mio Nakajima was the third born child of Ryujin and Juna Nakajima and born into a very wealthy family. Her father, Ryujin, was a well-known architect and scroll interpreter in Takigakure and her mother, Juna, was a highly respected medic-nin. As Mio's "growing pains" began, her parents insisted that she prepare a few years ahead of time before going the the Ninja Academy. So, she took martial arts under the tutelage of their neighbor, a Jounin who helped proctor the Chuunin exams. The Nakajimas were pretty high up in the social class food chain and this allowed Mio to live a comfortable and trouble-free life...well, as trouble free as it would seem in the eyes of others. It was no secret, either, that the Nakajima's were descended from the Shoubu Clan and all in the family, including Mio, had unlocked the ability to utilize the "Dokushingan." Mio was still an amateur at it.
During Mio's 1st year at the Ninja Academy, rumors began spreading around her the school that her father had been having an affair a few years before she was born. In truth, Mio couldn't really understand what they could mean. As far as she knew, her parents got along just fine. But when she would mention these things to her brother, Keisuke, or her sister, Taki, they would just turn their eyes away and change the subject or not say anything at all. This made Mio curious and she tried asking her mother, but received a swift slap to the face for even bringing it up. After all, how dare she bring up something like her father being unfaithful? He was a hardworking man and well respected in the village and dealt with enough stress with his work. People were just jealous and hated to see other people successful. It was a fact of life.
Mio left it alone after that.
Mio's final year at the Academy was drawing to a close and she was preparing to undergo becoming a Genin ninja once she was assigned a team and a sensei. One night, after taking the lap on her run before leaving school, she caught sight of her father entering a bar nearby. Thinking that maybe it was someone else, she kept walking down the street until she distinctly heard her father's voice coming out of the place. Mio stopped and hid herself behind a nearby building and saw her father coming out of the bar. She shook her head. Her father was a scroll translator and architect. He would never just go binge drinking after work because he knew how much her mother hated that. They were happy together and had been happy together ever since she was born. Sure, they had their problems...but what couple was perfect? None.
Mio went home and never brought up the issue again.
Her graduation went by faster than she realized. After leaving the Academy, she stayed home and helped her sister prepare for the Jounin exam as Mio was getting ready to train before meeting up with her future sensei and teammates. Her brother, Keisuke, was preparing for his induction into the world of an Anbu and so he was going to travel the countryside for a while and get stronger.
That summer…was a summer she would never soon forget.
Mio, on her way to meet some friends at the local noodle house, received a message from her father by delivery from a scroll. His shadow had been placed into the scroll and she was able to speak to him. Being the spoiled princess that she was, Mio made a huge fuss until her father snapped at her saying to come to the hospital. That stopped Mio immediately. She told her friends that she would have to meet up with them another day for dinner. Mio raced to the hospital...
...and was faced with one of her worst nightmares.
Her mother, brother, and sister had been under a terrible attack. Her mother and Taki died immediately during impact from an explosion jutsu; Keisuke was still alive but barely hanging on by a thread. The medical-nin didn't think he would last through the night. Mio and her father stayed by Keisuke's side all that night, her father finally drifting off to sleep around 3 that morning; Mio stayed up, holding her brother's hand. A couple of hours after dawn came and the gut wrenching limpness of her brother’s hand could be felt in her palm, Mio's tears falling from her face as she screamed her brother's name, pleading for him to rise up once more. The medical-nin rushed in and attempted to resuscitate him and he came back for just a few minutes longer. In the end, Keisuke died that morning during that summer.
The remainder of Mio's year was a blur; busy, but a blur nonetheless. Her father began to cram business procedure and management down her throat until she began to simply turn into a robotic being in the house. Instead of having a proper funeral, they held a quick funeral that lasted all of 30 minutes and her father didn't even bother setting up a shrine for the urns containing the ashes of her mother, brother, and sister. Mio no longer could go forth for her Genin training as her father wanted her to take over the architectural firm and scroll reading that he would leave behind in the event of his death. There was no longer a need of her even dreaming of becoming a Sanin one day. No. She would go to school for scholarly duties and that was it. After all, Mio was the only offspring left in the Nakajima family. She
had to take over her father's duties before he died.
Mio was sick of it. She didn't even have the energy to go anywhere. All the stress and sadness from the past few months was literally eating her away. She was laid up in her bed for nearly a week which pissed her father off to no end. After all, Mio couldn't concentrate on scrolls or blueprints if she was ill. But she didn't care anymore. She just didn't give a damn.
As Mio was recovering, she noticed that her father was drinking more and more these days and getting even more aggressive and irritable. He also went into his study room and locked himself inside, not even bothering to have dinner. Mio was losing her father. She'd practically become an orphan.
During the last day of her recovery, Mio woke up in the morning and decided she was curious as to what it was her father was doing in his study so while he was at work, she snuck in and saw nothing out of the ordinary: a file cabinet, book shelf filled with books, paper strewn across the desk. However, there was a book opened with blank pages on either side. It looked to be a journal. Mio, unable to resist the temptation her curiosity was poking at, she flipped it forward a few pages. He'd written about the incident with her family and his feelings on it. It seemed as though her father mourned more in the journal than he had in real life. It was, well, irritating. The book was pretty fat and looked worn from age. To Mio's displeasure, it was as big as a dictionary. She didn't know if she had patience to read it from the beginning. But she figured, what the hell, why not flip a few chapters to the beginning...or as close as she would dare.
But there was no need.
When she turned toward the front of the journal, there was a photograph stuck between the pages. It was of a kid and the child looked about 13 years old and saw the date of when the photo was taken. It was about 3 years before she'd entered the Ninja Academy and on the bottom of the photo was scribbled a name, though it was smudged and she couldn’t read it. Mio was suddenly confused. She decided to see just what it was her father had written in between these two pages. The entry was, to say the least, appalling.
Turns out her father and mother's relationship had turned rather rocky. Her father had gone into his drinking binges and began frequenting to a bar where he became friendly with Hana. The two even went so far as to have an "affair" which pretty much infuriated Mio as she discovered this. Apparently she had born a child and wasn't sure of whether or not to tell her father. However, the following words brought some hope to Mio.
The boy...he may be my son. But when I went to go and check with Hana to get a blood test, she and her son had left town. When I finally got in contact with her via a shadow I’d implemented, she refused to tell me where it was they'd gone or what part of the damn country it was! Hana claimed it was because she didn't want to get her or her child's hopes up. But whatever...it bugs me to no end. Now I'll never know if the child is mine or not.
Mio, at the prospect of having an older brother...another sibling, jumped at the chance that her father may have not given up and tried to find him. She scanned through later entries and came up with the mentioning of "the boy" here and there. But several more entries later, Mio struck gold.
Though this may not be a fact, I have searched and searched for the boy and found that he may no longer be in the country. Rumor has it that he wound up going on some journey, perhaps towards Konohagakure or even Amegakure? I'm not too sure. I'm somewhat skeptical of all this information I have received...but right now, it's the only lead I have. He may quite possibly be there.
Mio knew that there was no way that her father was going to be able to search for "the boy," especially since he was working full time at the company and now training her to become the successor. No. There was just no time. Mio decided that she would make an excuse to leave the country and travel, but then join a team of ninjas so she could hope to gather more information. If "he" really was her brother, there was a chance that she could bring him back home with her and possibly make her father's life a little less miserable.
She managed to convince her father that she wanted to study in other countries to further her education in scroll reading. But in truth, she just wanted to fix her broken family and heal it, make it where they could live their lives again in a small semblance of joy. With any luck, Mio would find her "brother."
