Dan took a right turn out of the alley, swaying left to right. There was no sound outside, it was almost scary how silent it was...It wasn't late enough for this kind of silence, he couldn't even hear any insects.
He took a moment to look over himself, thinking about if he looked good enough to be seen in "public". There was a smudge of dirt on his left pants leg.
"Son of a bitch," Dan muttered. He would never admit it, but Dan is amazingly worried about his appearance. "A hero has to at least looks stylish," he told himself. "Maybe I should buy some new pants."
Just then, Dan heard it. A sound that broke the silent ambiance. It was a caw from above his head. A bluebird.
The creature stood perched on the front of a building over the entrance to a local gardening shop, it's blue underbelly glistened as if it had some sort of metal under the feathers. It's wings crossed behind it's back, and legs bent forward to make it seem unproportional.
"A bluebird?" Dan thought. Not at all natural to the desert that was Sunagakure.
It was just a bird, but something seemed strange about it. Dan took a good look at it as it beamed down upon him with it's...that was it...the eyes, they weren't black..they were red...a bright red, almost pink...
Dan stood, staring at the bird for a good thirty seconds...it's gaze never focusing away from the young man below it.
Dan began to become irritated. "What the hell you lookin' at!?" He screamed at the top of his lungs. He instantly covered his mouth trying to deny to himself that he had let himself get so upset over a bird...Did he wake anyone up?
Dan took a peek around himself, and that's when he noticed something...It was night time, no one was there, and still his screaming gave off no echo...
Dan screamed again, this time just trying to get a responce from someone, "HEY!" Still no echo in the stillness. The bird opened it's mouth, and delivered a loud high pitched sound that sounded like nails on a chalk board...
That's when it happened. The area around him started to...melt. Dan took a step back in fear, not really sure what was happening. Out of the melting goo came what looked like humanoid shapes...Humans? No, they weren't humans, more like demons...Crawling on all fours around him.
Dan quickly armed himself with a kunai, yet not really sure yet how to defend himself, he had never really been surrounded like this before.
Dan was shaking now, and not sure what to do. "Wait...this...it's Genjutsu!" Dan exclaimed at the bird still peering at him. The figures were getting closer...not even fifteen feet away now, and he was surrounded...Dan thought hard on what to do. "Genjutsu...Genjutsu..." Dan pondered. Then his memory finally came to light.
"Nothing in Genjutsu can hurt you right? Except yourself!" Dan had found his solution, he reached into his pouch on his side and brought out a nail. "No time for second thoughts..." Dan assumed, and shoved the nail into his thigh.
"SHIT THAT HURT!" Dan screamed as he closed his eyes.
When he opened them, he was still in his same place. Standing there, just staring at the bluebird above him. "What...in the hell..are you?" His vision blurring.
The creature broke it's fixed gaze. It parted it's wings and took it's leave, flapping rapidly as if to get away quickly.
Dan was dizzy, and fatigued. "What...the...hell...was that?" Dan huffed under his breath, and laid on his back in the middle of the street, which he noticed were filled once again with the sounds of insects.
